IBC Technical - CEMproof Sealing
1st Apr 2008

Advantages of the system chosen

The advantages of the CEMproof sealing system can be summarised as follows:
– Highest level of security (double sealing/abP [General building inspection test approval] obtained)
– No need for subsequent injections – overall cost is fixed from the outset
– The sealant is on the water side and protects the concrete
– CEMtobent has been checked for quality and seal; a QM system is in place
– Water cannot run along behind the seal as is the case with sheeting, etc
– Assists the ability of fissures in concrete to mend themselves (sintering process)
– Can be applied regardless of weather conditions
– CEMtobent double sealing can also be used in flowing groundwater, because the position of the sheet, on the water side, means that no traces of bentonite can be washed out. CEMtobent double sealing is a layer of lining made up of two sealant components that complement each other in an optimal fashion

- The primary sealing layer (3) is a geotextile coated with polyethylene
- The secondary sealing layer (1+2) is a high-quality dense mat of bentonite (see diagram above)

CEMproof Sealing System is already being extensively used for tunnel building (in cut-and-cover tunnels and tunnels with open building methods). Experts are convinced that, in particular for the sealing of cut-and-cover tunnels, the CEMproof sealing system will set new standards for safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness, both for "non-pressing ground water" and "pressing groundwater".

Currently, the B10 tunnel in Pragsattel, Stuttgart is being sealed with the CEMproof sealing system, cost-effectively and on schedule, regardless of weather conditions.

The basic principle of the sealing system can be illustrated as follows:
Bentonite waterproofing membrane/CEMproof CEMtobent CombiSeal system; dense bentonite mat; high-tech double sealing layer

Sealing mechanism
When wetted, bentonite powder swells. In the CEMproof sealing system the extent of the swelling process is prevented by thermal and mechanical forces. Thus the force of the sole plate or the weight of the backfill material behind the liner creates the pressure required for the sealant layer to form a barrier which is extremely impermeable. The dry bentonite powder is converted into a gel-like bentonite sealing skin that protects the building securely for decades and prevents any moisture entering.

Summary
The CEMproof sealing system has met the high demands of this project in full. It is suitable for all sealing needs related to concrete structures.

The combination of the CEMtobent (r) dense bentonite mat and concrete construction is ideal, allowing the unavoidable fissures in the concrete to be sealed permanently and reliably.
All CEMproof systems can be put in place on time, regardless of weather conditions.
