Dublin City Council Architects have created a distinctive public building with Longmeadows Pitch and Putt Club, within the parameters of a very modest brief |
| Ballyfermot locals have been enjoying Longmeadows Pitch and Putt Club for years so when they were asked to help raise funds for new facilities, they were quick to lend a hand. Additional funds were received from Sports Capital grants and the remainder was provided by the Council. The course has been extended to a full 18 holes with the clubhouse comprising a large dining area and meeting room which can be combined by means of a sliding partition to cater for interclub tournaments. Proper canteen and toilet facilities are provided in addition to a club office. The Parks Department section of the clubhouse contains offices and staff facilities in addition to stores to house equipment used to maintain the course. Two spine walls form the backbone of the plan – one separating the larger elements of the brief from the ancillary ones, the other clearly dividing the two functions; the clubhouse proper from the depot of the Parks Department who maintain the course. |
| The horizontality of the building is accentuated by the overhanging flat roof, the plane of which is only broken by the tank room which forms the vertical plane of the entrance and creates the internal rooflight. Strong external colours have been selected for the main elements - spine walls, building and the glazing elements while internally, the colour palette is a muted one of white, grey and black as the function rooms direct themselves towards the landscape.
