Galvanizing in Engineering - Roseisle Distillery by RIM Fabrications

The Galvanizing Awards traditionally attracts a diverse array of entries and this year’s awards proved to be no different with category finalists including a whiskey distillery, a Victorian warehouse extension and a listed Church porch gates. In response to the diverse array of entries received, judges also awarded three highly commended prizes. Judging the awards this year were sustainable winner of last year’s Galvanizing Awards, Rebecca Egan of Bucholz McEvoy Architects; Jan-Carlos Kucharek of RIBA Journal; Phil Williams of The Institution of Structural Engineers; and Iqbal Johal of Galvanizers Association.

Jan-Carlos Kucharek comments: “Entering the judging room, I was not only surprised by the number of entries in this year's Galvanizers Awards, but by the general standard, which over the years that I have been helping to judge the awards, has only gone up. I'm usually one of its harshest critics, but on this occasion however my hand was stayed by the scrutiny required to really get to the bottom of a project and discover how each was using the medium of galvanizing to help realise the project's bigger ideas. The high level of submissions left us pondering our choices well into the afternoon. It also gave us the opportunity to award ‘Highly Commended’ accolades to three projects that incorporated galvanizing into their fabric. Both these and the award winners serve as exemplars of galvanizing, and show how its industrial nature and simplicity can be raised to something that is both functional and enduring. The simplest solutions are at the root of all good architecture, and this year’s winners prove that point beautifully.”
