Eight Ft Eco House

Eight ft Eco House

This innovative building solution, which incorporates everything a sustainable house should be, is a mere eight ft wide.
Located in West London, the budget for this project was £600k (€900) and took a year to complete.

This compact house features the following energy efficient features:

- Passive solar design to maximise winter solar gain and minimise summer cooling.
- A ground coupled heat pump system to provide winter heating and summer cooling. This draws heat out of the ground in winter using three 50m deep bore holes which connect back to a heat pump that extracts the heat and transfers it to the underfloor heating circuits that run throughout the house.
- Photovolatic solar panels on the roof to generate electricity.

- Passively ventilated bathrooms to reduce energy consumption.
- Rainwater harvesting to reuse rainwater to flush the toilets.

The project was designed by Pitman Tozer Architects, in conjunction with Arup Environmental engineering.

The finished building will use as little as one third of the energy of a new house built to the current UK Building Regulations, an impressive feat to say the least!
