Roads Minister Conor Murphy views progress on A26 Ballee Road East to Ballymena Bypass Scheme
Major £24m road build gets underway

A major £24m roads scheme was been officially launched in Northern Ireland this week by the Roads Minister Conor Murphy.

Roads Minister Conor Murphy today cut the first sod of the A2 Maydown to City of Derry Airport Dual Carriageway scheme.

The Minister said that the works, which will take 18 months to complete, are of significant local importance. The contract was recently awarded to Lagan Construction Ltd.

He said: “The improvements will greatly improve journey times for both strategic traffic and other road users in the local community and will, in turn, contribute towards the continued economic development of the north and efforts to improve road safety.

Following the sod cutting ceremony, the Minister made a site visit to the £6million A26 Ballee Road East to Ballymena Bypass Scheme.

Contractor FP McCann started work on the scheme in early June 2009 and will take 10 months to complete.

It will provide a direct connection from the A26 Ballee Road East dual carriageway, underneath the Larne Road Roundabout to the M2 Ballymena Bypass.
