SPOTLIGHT ON A MAJOR PROJECT:

Atlantic Route Corridor

Due for completion in 2015, it includes the N15, N17, N18, N20 and N25 from Letterkenny to Waterford via Sligo, Tuam, Ennis, Limerick, Mallow and Cork. Already, a total of 28 km of improvements have opened to traffic.


- N18 ARC: Gort to Crusheen (Q4 2008 – Q3 2011)
This 22 km dual carriageway will bypass the town of Gort and the village of Crusheen. Main contractor: SIAC Wills Joint Venture.

- N18 ARC: N18 Oranmore to Gort (to commence in 2010 at the earliest)
This 26.6 km dual carriageway is at preliminary design stage. A major three level junction is proposed at Rathmorrissy at the northern end of the scheme where the proposed road ties into the N6 Galway Ballinasloe scheme and the M17 Galway Tuam scheme.

- N25 ARC: Waterford City Bypass (€600m , Q2 2006 –-Q4 2010) This 23-km Dual Carriageway extends from Kilmeaden in Co Waterford to Slieverue in Co Kilkenny.

Main contractor: Celtic Roads Group (Dragados, NTR, and Royal BAM (Ascon)).


- M20 ARC: M20 Cork Limerick Motorway (construction to begin in 2011)
The scheme will be split into two PPP schemes: the motorway will consist of a 40 km Northern Section and a 40 km Southern Section, linking Kileens (at the junction of the proposed Cork North Ring Road) to Patrickswell (at the junction with the N21 in Attyfin).

This project amalgamates three schemes: Patrickswell to Croom, Croom to Mallow and Mallow to Blarney. Construction will start in county Cork and end in County Limerick. €10m has been allocated between Cork CoCo and Limerick CoCo in 2009 for design purposes.

- N25 ARC: Carrigtwohill to Middleton (completion 2015)
This 5 km dual carriageway will provide links to the Atlantic Road Corridor at its western end and the N9 and N11 at its eastern end. Work has begun on the Waterford City bypass due for completion in 2010.
