A pier at Baltimore Harbour in Cork
€3.2m for harbour works

Some €3.2m has been allocated by the Government for work on the state’s regional harbours this year.

The Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey made the announcement at the opening of the new €1m refurbished West Pier at Baltimore and Skibbereen Harbour this week.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Dempsey said an additional €1.33m has been allocated to the harbor this year for remedial works.

The funding will facilitate the relocation of the Roll-on Roll-off Ferry Berth/Slipway and will also allow for the extension of the North Pier over Four Berth.

The funding is part of a €3m fund being made available this year for remedial works at some of the state’s regional harbours.

Harbours in Arklow, Bantry Bay, Kinsale, Tralee & Fenit and Youghal also received funding.

Speaking at the opening today Minister Dempsey said: “For over three years now the Department of Transport has been funding essential works to protect the fabric of our regional harbours.

“I am particularly pleased that even in these times of significant economic difficulty I have been able to secure this important funding for 2009.”
